Reason for members leaving

Members left because…ill health, work pressure, moving away

Clubs have together funded a piece of apparatus that serves all communities with Zone.

Finding venues without cost has been the single biggest challenge as with all Zone areas the Zone is spread out and not all clubs like to travel in darkness so face to face meetings are only possible in the summer months if a club is willing to host a Zone meeting.

Are there any issues in any of the clubs or the Zone that a Cabinet officer might be able to assist with?

No

Zone Chair remarks:

As a Zone chair who is a club President and that works shifts (meaning I can chair roughly 50% of my own club meetings) and has two other clubs in the Zone which have their club meeting on the same night as my own club, I feel I have to prioritise my own club which makes visiting other clubs VERY difficult. Likewise, Zone meetings have to fit in with my own availability and of the clubs. I'm not sure I'm doing a good enough job of keeping in touch with the clubs in the Zone.

Further new members are in the pipeline (hopefully)

I have held a total of 3 Zone meetings with only 1 club not wanting to participate in with any Zone meetings or activities.

All clubs have lost members through either age-related health problems or have moved away from the area. Membership is still a struggle and most clubs membership have members in their 70-80's, making it hard to recruit new younger members.

We have held a Zone skittles evening and a quiz night.

A couple of clubs have been involved with Funfest that also involve other Zones. Loddon Valley have helped Newbury with their Fireworks night, and Basingstoke have helped Loddon Valley with their Tadley Treacle Fair.

All clubs have had Christmas activities.

Loddon Valley and Basingstoke have carried out Prostate Cancer testing days.

All clubs within my Zone are actively looking for new members.

My own club, Loddon Valley have recently recruited 2 new members and possibly another couple who have shown interest in joining after recently being involved in our Christmas Santa float throughout December.

I will be carrying on my role as Zone Chair for next year.

Zone E - Lion Stephen Boast

I am in the process of visiting clubs in the Zone. I hold quarterly well attended Zone meetings where active discussion is encouraged. We are involved in many Zone projects. I am trying to reinstate 'Visiting Lions' which took a bit of a back seat during Covid.

Current Lost New

Farnborough & Aldershot Lions 16 2
Hart Lions 16
Hook, Odiham & Hartley Wintney 23
Yateley & District  28

Membership has been fairly static within the Zone.

Hook, Odiham & Hartley Wintney lost Lion Judith Goodchild to higher service late last year. She will be sadly missed as she was an extremely well respected & active member within the community.

Farnborough & Aldershot, despite merging, lost one member to higher service, two moved away, one resigned & one transferred to Fleet.

All Clubs have been instrumental in supporting the Community Store who have recently purchased a new van.

Fleet recently ran a very successful "Blues Brothers' evening raising funds for funfest.

Farnborough & Aldershot continue to support the Aldershot Grub Hub with food donations & monetary assistance.

All clubs are running their usual fundraising projects.

ROAR continues to be well supported throughout the Zone.

All clubs are actively involved in membership drives.

Lion Mark Cooper is currently promoting the Child Sight cameras and we are currently touting for trained operators.

(Figures taken from Club Health Assessment, January 2026, for the last 12 months)

Members generally leave because of ill-health, passing to higher service, relocation elsewhere in the country, or inactive members resigning their membership.

Further new members are anticipated before the end of the Lion year.

Three Zone meetings have been held so far this year, hosted by different Clubs, with the 4th meeting scheduled for 20th May. All Clubs have generally been represented, with an average attendance of just over 20 members. These meetings have helped general communications between Clubs and facilitated the sharing of ideas and information.

Sadly, Bracknell Lions Club has decided to close, and I attended their final meeting in January. Six of the seven current active members (1 member is currently 'At Large') plan to transfer their membership to another Club in the Zone, possibly Wokingham.

All clubs have been active in fundraising, service and social activities as their membership numbers allow. Clubs have also collaborated well, supporting one another's events where a greater number of helpers has been required.

I have been able to attend a variety of Club events including Windsor's Horse Ride and Awards evening, helped Henley with Regatta parking, and Woodley and Earley's Santa Sleigh and quiz evening. Further visits to Club meetings are scheduled to take place over the next 3 months.

There is a plan for Zone social event – a bowls evening – to be hosted by Maidenhead Lions at their usual meeting venue of Desborough Bowling Club.

Another (New) Member Orientation Session is planned for Saturday 16th May, which will follow a similar format to that of last year, which will be hosted by Windsor Lions Club.

I'm delighted to advise that, having served as Zone Chair for 3 years, next year's Zone Chair will be Jo Manisier, of Maidenhead Lions.

Zone H - Lion Robert Holder

Having only recently taken on the role of Zone Chair – due to the passing of my predecessor Jersey Lion Ian Robins at the end of November 2025, it has been a little challenging picking up the threads and following in the footsteps of such an amazing Lion.

However, I have some small wins. I held a Zone "Teams" Meeting on February 12th which was reasonably well attended and included PDG Jarvis MacDonald and incoming DG Tim Hanton and their input was hugely appreciated.

Our next Zone Meeting has been scheduled for Thursday 4th June 2026.

Membership

Membership has been fairly static within the Zone an overall loss of 4 members.

A breakdown of individual Club membership movements detailed below:

Crofton:

Membership reduced by 3 due to health issues, membership now 15.

Eastleigh:

No change – membership remains at 13.

Guernsey:

Lost one member – emigrated to Australia and badged up a new member so

membership remains at 15.

IoW – Newport:

Lost one Member to Higher Service and had a Transferee to their Club – Membership remains at 6.

IoW – Sandown & Shanklin:

Badged up a new member but this person resigned after 5 months. Membership remains at 10.

Jersey:

Lost two members one to Higher Service and one resignation due to personal reasons. However, they badged up two new members.

Membership remains at 30.

Romsey & Waterside:

Lost 2 members to Higher Service and 1 resignation due to ill health and badged up 4 new members. Membership now 15.

Swanwick:

Lost one member – resignation for family reasons in January. Membership now 15 with a new member being signed up in March.

Club Visits:

To date I have not yet had an opportunity to make any Club visits, though I did attend Jersey Lions Charter Night on the 23rd November in my capacity as Zone Chair. My intention is to start in April with Club visits, though this will be challenging due to Club meeting nights and may involve a few hotel stopovers, but I intend to start my Club visits with the two Isle of Wight Clubs. This follows on from a very successful meeting in Guernsey with Roger and Ann Huntley on the 8th March and I am just awaiting dates back from Ann to hold a joint social with the two IOW Clubs. I will then follow up with visits to the remaining Clubs in Zone H – whether it be Club Meeting nights or to one of their events.

Membership Matters:

I did encourage members within my Zone to attend the March Zoom call. It was encouraging that some members from within Zone H participated on the call along with 7 members from my Guernsey Club. I shall be promoting this monthly event again towards the end of March.

Convention – Swindon:

Once again this has been challenging speaking with the Clubs and encouraging them to attend, even if it's just to attend the Saturday business session.

Unfortunately, for some Clubs convention dates clashed this year with long term Club or Lions personal commitments firmly in place.

A very good example is Jersey Lions who are holding their major annual Fundraiser, Swimarathon over this weekend! However, I have been able to encourage (coerce) a total number of 7 Guernsey lions to attend along with one partner and one visiting Lion from Zimbabwe.

Zone H Club Events:

The majority of Clubs were very active leading up to the Christmas festivities. This will now lead on to more events as we start to exit the winter months.

In addition, from what I have been able to determine, a lot of clubs are actively promoting their individual clubs for new members.
